Climate change is among the most pressing global challenges of our time. Addressing climate change mitigation through the ongoing transition to lower carbon sources of energy poses unique challenges and opportunities to creating a more just and equitable global energy system and global economic architecture.
ECJS Lab’s research on climate justice focuses on cross disciplinary research, bringing rigorous systematic investigation and a voice to broad perspectives on the social, cultural, and geopolitical context for energy transition, climate finance, and climate adaptation. New frameworks and evaluative tools are needed to ensure that climate solutions can alleviate conditions of poverty and bring about improved welfare to all peoples. ECJS Lab will bring together US and global scholars and activists to cultivate visioning, thought leadership, and evidence-based analysis on the topic of global climate justice, just energy transition, and energy security justice.
Through a series of workshops and data analysis, ECJS Lab will work with NYU’s Institute for Public Knowledge to investigate how to integrate justice-oriented objectives into the working programs of energy transition practioners in highly impacted communities such as Appalachia and the Southwest US. Research will also focus on data analysis on global climate finance for climate adaptation to bring enriched analysis to policy discussions about climate justice and global finance and innovative solutions to global climate adaptation funding.
