Born and raised in Ibadan, Nigeria, Oyindamola Shoola '20 is fascinated with the written word—its artistic use, as well as its ability to expose social injustices. A gifted writer, blogger, and feminist, she transferred to the NYU SPS Division of Applied Undergraduate Studies (DAUS) after earning an associate degree, to pursue a bachelor’s degree that would hone her skills as a writer and communicator. Through her contributions to “Dovetail,” the Division’s literary magazine; a deep immersion in the social sciences, which offered the insights and proficiencies hiring managers seek; and an internship at Elsevier, she gained the experience to unlock a wealth of new personal and professional opportunities. Financial aid and scholarships afforded the assistance to complete her degree with little monetary burden. Today, she is co-founder and fellowship coordinator for SprinG, a literary movement that aims to promote, revitalize, and improve Nigerian writers and literature.
Surina Jain has always loved to write and has a deep passion for the editorial aspects of book publishing. When she enrolled in the MS in Publishing: Digital and Print Media, she had already earned a graduate degree in English language and literature, and had held a number of editorial jobs in India. She was on her way to a dream career, but knew she needed additional insights and connections in the publishing industry to ensure her success. A standout student, she received the Bantam Publishing Studies Fellowship and the Cornerstone Campaign Scholarship. It was an NYU SPS Wasserman Center Internship Grant, however, that allowed her to pursue an unpaid internship at the Tessler Literary Agency—a full-service boutique agency that represents best-selling and emerging authors. The experience has provided her with knowledge of the entire publishing process and the network to excel.
