Presidential elections often bring bold rhetoric on energy and climate policy, but 2024 presents a unique challenge. The stark divide between candidates—former President Donald Trump’s entrenched support for fossil fuels and Vice President Kamala Harris’s more climate-forward approach with threats to rein in hydrocarbons—reflects the deep polarization in the country.

What the U.S. truly needs is a sensible middle-ground approach that balances energy security with climate action.

Striking the right mix is challenging but crucial. Too much focus on climate risks alienating voters who fear higher energy prices and some who remain climate skeptics, while too much emphasis on drilling undermines sustainability goals and climate mitigation.
