Before graduating last semester, MS in Professional Writing (MSPW) student Nandi Dabrowski was awarded an NYU Wasserman Internship Grant. Established to provide financial assistance to students pursuing unpaid internships in qualifying industries, the Wasserman Center Internship Grant is awarded for fall, spring, and summer terms. Applications are reviewed by Wasserman Center staff and representatives from various NYU academic departments. Read below to learn more about Nandi’s internship experience during her final semester in the MSPW:
Where was your internship placement?
The New York Amsterdam Newspaper-- which is the oldest Black newspaper in the country that offers local, national, and international news for the Black community.
What was the application and interview process like for your internship?
I found the position on idealist.com and it was a pretty quick process. I had a Zoom interview with the Chief Revenue Officer and she offered me the position during the interview. I accepted the following day via email.
Congratulations on receiving the Wasserman Internship Grant! How did you go about applying for and receiving it?
I learned about the Wasserman Internship Grant from an email that our Academic Director sent to students and applied right after accepting my internship. The stipend was provided at the end of the term and helped with the financial sacrifice to take this amazing, but unpaid, opportunity.
Have you utilized any of the other resources from the Wasserman Center? If so, what?
Since Fall 2021 was my final semester in the MSPW, I used Handshake often. Because Handshake is available to alumni, I plan to use these services even more when I need to find employment opportunities.
This Fall, you completed your thesis, congratulations! Can you share more about it?
In the MSPW we can pick between completing a traditional research or a product design thesis project-- and I did a product design thesis. I designed a podcast that will provide a space for critical analysis of scripted media. In particular, the podcast I designed for my project is a space to discuss the correlation between the depictions of Black women on television and film to how Black women are treated in society.
Any MSPW shout outs?
I completed the MSPW program in three semesters as a full-time student. With the help and guidance of Dr. Rodriguez Kerr and Dr. Newhouse, I felt support throughout the program.
