Congratulations to Morgan Vrbetic, who has been awarded the Malkemes Scholarship for Spring 2023. This award aims to support students entering the MS in Translation & Interpreting program with a focus on work that advances issues of equity and inclusion.
As the child of a Croatian immigrant and First Nations woman, Morgan views translation and interpreting as intrinsic. Morgan received an Honours undergraduate degree in French-Spanish-English Translation from the University of Ottawa, interned with the Translation Bureau of Canada and Cuso International, and donates to the Ottawa Black Diaspora Coalition, NDN Collective, and Center for Reproductive Rights. In Morgan’s own words, “I dream of little more than bringing my queer, Indigenous voice to everything I do, especially as I expand my own knowledge. I work hard to marry my skills as a translator and editor with my passion for equity by studying radical activism and feminism outside of the classroom from authors like Angela Davis, Malcolm X, Audre Lorde, Leslie Feinberg and bell hooks. I apply what I’ve learnt to my work through my career pursuit of working in human rights and development and through continuing to engage with organizations and coalitions that are making change in the communities I care about.”
