Tisch Center Alumni Spotlight: Wenjie Sun, Google

Wenjie Sun graduated in 2015 with a M.S. in Hospitality Industry Studies from the Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality. He is currently a product analyst at Google on the ads privacy and safety team.

What has your journey been like after graduating NYU?

I did an internship at Priceline.com after completing my first year at the Tisch center. Upon graduation, I was offered a full-time opportunity as an SEM analyst to support Priceline’s hotel and rental car business. My job worked regularly with all major search engines, which helped me land a job at my current company.

Can you talk about your current role at Google?

I was first hired as an analytical lead to support our large advertisers on Google Hotel Ads. After completing my second master degree in Data Science at NYU, I applied for an internal transfer and became a technical product analyst. My job is to provide analytical insights for product management and engineering team.

What are you passionate about in the work that you do?

Billions of people rely on Google every day for high-quality and reliable information. As a member in ads privacy and safety, my work directly contributes to upholding the integrity of our product and trust from users. It is a tremendous reasonability, but also makes me feel very proud of my work every day.

In what ways has your NYU experience had an impact on your career and shaped who you are today?

The Tisch Center offers a unique combination of academic and real-world knowledge throughout the program. I definitely benefited from classes like Pricing Strategies and Hotel Operation Analysis to understand how the hotel industry operates. These industry insights helped me stand out among other candidates when applying for the internship at Priceline. I also benefited from classes like Advanced Research Seminar to build the academic foundation for my further study and career development in the long run.

What career advice would you give to NYU students?

Don’t be afraid of numbers! Many parts of this industry, such as revenue management, online marketing, hotel finance... all make decisions based on analysis. You should embrace opportunities to learn and practice these skills throughout the program.
