Charles Altman

Prof. Charles Altman has many years of experience in real estate law, with a specialization in CMBS mortgage finance. He worked at insurance companies and investment banks and was responsible for legal operations for over $10 billion of commercial mortgage origination. Prof. Altman has extensive experience in real estate workouts and restructuring on behalf of lenders, borrowers and the FDIC.

Prof. Altman also has a keen interest in housing. He studied at the Heartwood School of Timber Framing and is knowledgeable about plumbing, electrical and HVAC systems. He collaborated in the development of a 100 unit multistory rental property in Westchester County, NY. Prof. Altman is committed to increasing the supply of affordable housing. He organized a highly successful FDIC program that sold 300 co-op apartments to their Manhattan and Brooklyn rent controlled tenants.

Prof. Altman is knowledgeable in systems analysis and coding. He was the founder of TIKON Mortgage Technologies and is co-inventor of US Patent 6,366,892, an AI system that incorporates legal negotiation and documentation with risk based securitization pricing. Prof. Altman teaches real estate law at the NYU Schack Real Estate Institute and is Adj. Professor of Law at the Benjmain N. Cardozo School of Law. Prof. Altman has produced various academic video productions and web seminars. He has been a visiting professor or guest
lecturer at the Columbia University Graduate School of Architecture and the N.Y.U. School of Law.
Prof. Altman is active in the New York City Bar Association and its Committee on Structured Finance and has served as Chair of the Real Estate Transactions Section of the American Association of Law Schools.
