A full-time clinical assistant professor of NYUSPS, Julie Tay teaches both online and onsite graduate and undergraduate courses under the Master of Science in Translation and the DAUS social science curriculum. In her role as academic director (2014-2017) Julie developed and launched numerous new courses for the MS translation curriculum, initiated the annual NYU translation conference, and helped create the student club NYU Translation Society. A lifetime translator/educator, Julie has worked nearly 3 decades both in the private and public sectors specializing in Chinese translation and interpreting, and niche market research and curriculum design. In 2003 Julie founded the community organization Mencius Society for the Arts (menciussociety.org) where she remains as chair and president today. In November 2017 (with NYU alumnus Mandy Liu) Julie co-translated and edited in English the 5th Edition of How Not to Get Sick by Liao Liping, a traditional Chinese medicine compendium slated for publication by the Shenzhen Ministry of Health. In February 2018, Julie received a NYSCA multiyear grant under the project Translating Silk and Bamboo providing for four translators to document immigrant oral histories and the rooting of Chinese music in America.
