David W. Woods, PhD, FAICP is Principal and Executive Vice President of GreenWoods Associates (GWA), based in Manhattan and Long Island, and has over thirty years of leadership experience as a public servant, non-profit organization leader, educator and planning consultant in private practice in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and other parts of the country. David’s academic background includes advanced degrees in urban sociology (PhD, Fordham University 2009), urban planning (MSP, Florida State University), and public administration (MA, University of Maryland). Throughout his career, David has focused on providing intelligent and responsive leadership that supports other leaders in effecting inclusive sustainable changes to promote livability, equitable community investment, and environmental sustainability for the long-term. My book Democracy Deferred: Civic Leadership after 9/11 (Palgrave MacMillan 2012) “…relates a story of civic engagement from his personal perspective as a participant observer. … This book … raise the important strategic question about how citizens can influence decision making in representative democracy. … most appropriate students in urban planning who are focused on a career in civic engagement as well as those studying urban sociology” (Lynne B. Sagalyn, Journal of Planning Education and Research, Vol.38 (1), March, 2018). In addition, I have been elected to the College of Fellows for the American Institute of Certified Planners (FAICP), the highest honor the American Planning Associations gives to planners “in recognition of exemplary leadership, high standards, outstanding achievements, and distinguished contributions of the art and science of planning.”
