NYU School of Professional Studies Hosts 85th Anniversary Forum on “The Future of Work”

To commemorate its 85^th Anniversary as a leader in providing professionally focused educational programs, the NYU School of Professional Studies hosted a forum on “The Future of Work” on February 12, 2020 at the NYU Kimmel Center for University Life.

NYU SPS Dean Susan Greenbaum welcomed the audience with remarks that highlighted the School’s unique position in preparing students for the workforce of the future. The event featured one-on-one conversations with Art Bilger, founder and CEO of WorkingNation, and Julia Lamm ’11, partner, Financial Services People & Organization Practice, PwC; a presentation by Anna Tavis, clinical associate professor and academic director of the Human Capital Management Program at the NYU SPS Division of Programs in Business; and a panel discussion with NYU SPS faculty members who are prominent industry experts.

The morning’s deep content explored the changes taking place in the world of work—from technological innovations and globalization, to shared work, the gig economy, and the urbanization of job creation—and how to address them. More than 100 individuals attended, including a cross section of government officials, hiring managers, and educational administrators in addition to NYU SPS faculty members, students, and administrators. On display was the Proclamation bestowed upon the School by the NYC Mayor’s Office to mark its 85^th Anniversary. The framed document, which was positioned on the stage for all to see, proclaimed October 28, 2019, NYU School of Professional Studies Day.

NYU SPS Chief of Staff Fiona Jaramillo enjoyed a discussion during the breakfast and networking session, which preceded the formal program.

In her opening remarks, NYU SPS Dean Susan Greenbaum spoke about the critical role the School has played in workforce development here in NYC, across the country, and around the globe.

During the first fireside chat, Art Bilger, founder and CEO of WorkingNation, was interviewed by Carolyn Kissane, clinical professor and academic director at the NYU SPS Center for Global Affairs.

Members of the faculty panel titled “Preparing the Next Generation of Leaders and Innovators,” enjoyed participating in a lively discussion.

Associate Dean Billie Gastic Rosado led the dialogue with a series of questions that served to frame the discussion, and to provide insight into the role of education in workforce development.

Tim Savage, clinical assistant professor at the Schack Institute of Real Estate, made a point about using data as a means to develop stories.

Andrea Chambers, clinical assistant professor and executive director at the Center for Publishing, noted the dramatic transformation in publishing due to technology.

Vanja Bogicevic, clinical assistant professor at the Jonathan M. Tisch Center of Hospitality, stressed the importance of helping students to redefine personal success.

Christian Busch, clinical assistant professor and director of the Global Economy Program at the Center for Global Affairs, posited that to innovate one must connect the dots.

Michael Valentine, clinical assistant professor at the Division of Programs in Business, spoke about the value of helping students to push past their comfort zones.
