NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs to Mark 15th Anniversary with a Timely Panel Discussion on the “Futures of Counterterrorism”

NEW YORK, October 23, 2019—The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Center for Global Affairs (CGA), which is celebrating its 15th Anniversary, will host an important discussion on the “Futures of Counterterrorism” on Wednesday, October 30, from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at the Woolworth Building, 15 Barclay St., Room 430.

The discussion, part of a series of lectures hosted by CGA that are free and open to the public, will focus on global responses to emerging terrorist threats. Five years ago, CGA began a research and consulting project for the United Nations Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate (CTED). Each semester, under the direction of CGA Clinical Professor Michael Oppenheimer, five to six CGA students have examined counterterrorism issues of current and emerging priority to the UN. The nature of these projects defines the evolution of the terrorist threat and of global responses: terrorist use of social media and the requirements of effective counter narratives; the problem of ISIS fighters and their families returning from zones of conflict, and best practices in managing this challenge; the uses and abuses of emerging technology in monitoring terrorist threats; and the role of public-private partnerships in defining and responding to emerging threats. Project results have been distributed/delivered in papers and briefings, and through conferences organized by CGA.

At the October 30 event, UN officials and top terrorism experts will join former CTED student participants for a discussion of this critical project on the future of counterterrorism.

Celebrating it 15th anniversary, the NYU School of Professional Studies Center for Global Affairs facilitates change by educating and inspiring our community members to become global citizens who are capable of identifying and implementing solutions to pressing global challenges. We believe that the development of solutions to global problems must be informed by an understanding that the world’s challenges are not merely challenges for and among states and traditional diplomatic outlets, but also challenges for nonstate actors, urban and rural communities, and regional organizations.

Through the MS in Global Affairs, the NEW MS in Global Security, Conflict, and Cybercrime, professional education programs, and public events, we prepare global citizens who are at home in all of these environments—and thus, who are effective agents of change.
