NYU SPS Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts Launches New Program for Book Publishing Professionals – The NYU Advanced Publishing Institute
New York, NY, March 28, 2023 – Following the recent celebration of the 25th Anniversary of its MS in Publishing program, the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYU SPS) Center for Publishing and Applied Liberal Arts (PALA) today announced the expansion of its programs to include a new international executive education program – the NYU Advanced Publishing Institute (NYU API) – in the global center of publishing, New York City.
The five-day course, designed for current mid- to senior-level book professionals, follows in the footsteps of the highly popular Yale Publishing Course, which ran from 2010 to 2019. The new course will take place at NYU, with the initial cohort attending the program from January 8-12, 2024.
NYU API all-day executive education sessions will feature lectures and workshops by leading publishing industry professionals. With an emphasis on real-world case studies and strategic initiatives, the course is designed to promote problem-solving and discourse on thorny issues facing publishing and media today. The program will also provide an excellent forum for publishing executives and managers to network, exchange ideas, and formulate strategies for growth and development moving forward.
Tentative 2024 NYU API course topics include:
- Rethinking marketing and publicity, including new approaches to book clubs, podcasts, influencers, and more
- Preparing for the next industry disruption and mastering the art of the pivot
- Diversity, equity, and inclusion strategies that yield meaningful and demonstrable results
- Publishing in a politically divisive era
- Best practices for ChatGPT and other forms of AI
- Sustainability in publishing: buzzword or reality? Who is achieving it, and how?
- Effective leadership strategies for 2024: inspiring, managing, and delivering results in an evolving publishing landscape
“We are thrilled to expand our publishing portfolio to include this high-level course for thought leaders in the industry. We anticipate that graduates of our MS in Publishing Program and Summer Publishing Institute, as well as publishing professionals worldwide, will benefit from this highly targeted learning experience,” said Andrea Chambers, associate dean of NYU SPS PALA.
“We greatly admired the Yale Publishing Course and believe our new NYU API program is the natural evolution and revision of a highly valued industry standard. The NYU API program will equip participants with the skills they need to grow their careers and businesses in the publishing industry,” added Chambers.
Tina C. Weiner, founder and director of the Yale Publishing Course and former Publishing Director of Yale University Press, will be the director of the new NYU Advanced Publishing Institute. Delighted to be involved in this new endeavor, she believes that NYU API will be filling the void left by the closing of the Yale Publishing Course and will continue its mission of providing professionals with new insights into the business of publishing while honing their management and leadership skills. “The program will offer a finely-tuned curriculum that will concentrate on deep dives into the challenges and opportunities facing publishers in the wake of the disruption of the pandemic years,” said Weiner.
Additional information about the program and a registration form is now available on the NYU SPS PALA webpage.
